Activities for Developing Phonological Awareness is designed to provide a wide variety of activities to develop awareness of how sounds differ, where they appear in words, what features make words rhyme, how syllables blend to make words and how mispronouncing a word can give a different meaning to a sentence.

Each lesson has the pictures that are necessary to complete the tasks, along with exact and simple directions for the lesson. Lessons are appropriate for individuals, small groups and for homework assignments. The skill areas have multiple activity pages to help the skills be more easily mastered.

One part of understanding language is being aware of how sounds blend together to make up words and how words can totally change by changing only one sound in a word; such as pan, can, fan. While only one sound changed, the meaning of the word totally changed. If a student has poor discrimination skills, words can easily be misunderstood and the meaning can be lost. If a student cannot blend syllables to make a word, the ability to sound out words is lacking. If a student cannot distinguish whether a certain sound is at the beginning or ending of a word, the word cannot be spelled. If a word is mispronounced in a sentence, context clues must be used to determine the intended word. The error word frequently rhymes or sounds much like the intended word.

Mastering these phonological awareness skills will aid students in:

  • correcting articulation errors
  • associating sounds to symbols
  • developing awareness of how sounds differ
  • locating where specific sounds occur in words
  • blending syllables into words
  • remembering sound, syllable, and word patterns.
