Interest Age: 5 to 10
ISBN: 9781575030920Help children develop oral language, reading, and writing skills as they build their own stories using the reproducible story pictures in Create A Story Language Activities. Students are first asked to talk about each picture and to respond to questions about what is happening. Students then create their own stories. Space is provided on each picture page for recording the student's story. Journeys to outer space, encounters with magical dinosaurs, wizards, and other characters make these stories appealing to the interests of young children. Some of the stories contain incomplete pictures for students to finish as they customise the story action.
The book is divided into seven sections:
- Conversation Stories. Picture scenes with blank conversation bubbles are used as stimuli for students' responses. Students complete the conversation bubbles and create a story about each picture.
- Sequence Stories. Each story includes four pictures. After listening to each story, students answer questions about story content. They are then asked to expand the story.
- Story Games. Story game boards are included in this section. Students tell stories about the pictures on the board as they move from space to space.
- Pick a Picture. Reproducible pictures are included in this section that can be used as stimuli for story telling activities. Students take turns selecting pictures and telling stories about them.
- Describe the Action. Students add characters to background scenes using reproducible manipulatives (people, animals, and objects). The students are then asked to tell stories about the picture scenes.
- Find the Picture. Students add details to incomplete pictures and tell stories about them.
- Story Starter Sentences. Students are presented with one-sentence "story starters" and must finish each of the stories by adding story events.
- Create an Adventure. The story starters in this section are more detailed than those in the previous section. Students are challenged to create adventure stories for each story starter.
