In Part 1 of this book, students are asked to respond to questions relating to familiar experiences such as shopping for groceries, riding the bus, and going to the doctor. After responding, students should be asked to talk about their experiences in each situation. Rules for social behaviour can be discussed as they relate to each topic and a list of What to Do and What Not to Do is included for each. The activities can be used to stimulate language development and sequencing skills as students describe activities such as doing laundry, purchasing groceries, and ordering food in a restaurant.
In Part 2, brief story situations are presented orally by the teacher. Each situation is represented in two pictures. The first shows an inappropriate behaviour and the second an appropriate one. Describe the situation that portrays inappropriate behaviour and ask: What is the problem in this picture? Discuss why the behaviour shown is undesirable or inappropriate. Then present and discuss the appropriate behaviour.
The activities in this book should be used in conjunction with real-life learning experiences that allow students to practice social interaction skills. A reproducible Basic Social Skills Checklist is included in the Appendix. This can be used to assess students' specific needs and to monitor progress. Skills relevant to social behaviours in a variety of situations are included on the checklist. Space for recording comments is also included. All materials are reproducible and worksheets may be distributed to family members for use in home programs. Ages 10 through adult.
