This reproducible program, based on current research and extensive experience, differs from other approaches in the consistency with which sound-symbol relationships are presented and reinforced. Each lesson requires just 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and the program can be used with students from the early grades through adulthood. The progression from simple to more complex phonic elements as well as the use of a multisensory approach increase the likelihood of success for improving reading and spelling abilities. Best of all, teachers can begin to use the program with their struggling readers after just a brief review of the instructional procedures.
Key features: • direct, explicit phonics instruction using multisensory methods • for students grade 2 and up who are struggling to decode • appropriate for dyslexic students, students with other learning disabilities, English language learners, and struggling and reluctant readers • each 10-15 minute lesson involves modelling, instruction, practice and assessment • each lesson is accompanied by practice reading using only the phonics already taught, with sight words and reading comprehension assessments • revised and expanded, based on a program with 80 years of success • reproducible lessons save schools money
Based on current research, this classic step-by-step phonics program was extensively revised in 2006 by Nancy Mather and Rhia Roberts. The original in 1938 was a groundbreaking work by education pioneers Samuel and Winifred Kirk and Thorleif Hegge, later revised by the Kirks and Esther Minskoff. The program has been used widely to teach reading to students who have failed to learn by other methods.
Set comprises two books: • Book 1 - Skills (spiral bound, 136 pages) • Book 2 - Practice (spiral bound, 112 pages)
