Phonix Phonics Word-Building Mats

The themed Phonix Phonics Word-Building Matss have been designed to encourage word-building skills and promote general language development.

When used with Phonix Cubes, the mats provide a colourful focus for segmenting and blending sounds to build a range of everyday words.

The 4 themes are:

• At Home
• In the Park
• On the Beach
• In the Woods

Suggestions for using the mats:

Select a mat and encourage children to talk about the scene. Can they:

• identify and name objects in the picture?
• think of other objects found in this setting?
• talk about spatial relationships (next to, behind, etc)?

Using the guide cords (colour-coded to match the mat), ask children to find each of the key objects in turn and, where appropriate, read the corresponding word. Encourage children to segment each word into its different sounds and find a cube to match each sound.

The cubes can then be joined and placed in the appropriate box on the mat. Later children can complete the mat without reference to the guide cord. This can then be used at the end to check the completed words.
