Emotion Regulation, Attachment

Some children and adults have particular difficulties with overwhelmingly intense negative emotions and/or pronounced difficulties with attachment to family members.

There are a number of different approaches and therapies to deal with these somewhat related issues of emotion regulation and attachment. One of the most widely used is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which combines traditional Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) with techniques such as mindfulness and acceptance, which are often associated with newer or "third wave" behavioural strategies. These extra techniques focus particularly on teaching people emotion regulation skills to assist them in dealing with the sometimes overwhelmingly intense negative emotions which hinder sufferers from being able to progress in therapy.

The following link gives a useful summary of the attachment theory of personality disorders.
