The Third Quest Teacher’s Materials

The Third Quest is a comprehensive reading intervention for struggling older readers that engages them through a balance of narrative fiction and informational text, intrigue and mystery as they travel through ancient history. Comprehensive lessons build word recognition skills, vocabulary, content knowledge, comprehension, fluency and study skills.

Poor reading skills produce below grade level performance across academic subjects and impact students' success in further education and careers. With The Third Quest, teachers have systematic, evidence-based materials to build adolescent students' reading skills and develop their confidence.

Proven to work at both Tiers 2 and 3, The Third Quest is highly motivating for students who have plateaued and given up hope of becoming competent readers. Students love the engaging fiction and informational text and quickly become accurate, expressive, and fluent readers.

The Third Quest Teacher’s Materials include everything one teacher or instructor needs to teach The Third Quest—The Third Quest Program Guide, Teacher’s Guides for each of nine levels, a Teacher’s Reader, map, posters, downloadable reproducible materials (including in-program assessments), short videos (for students) teacher training videos and one set of student materials.

Who is the Third Quest appropriate for?

Upper Primary/Middle and High School Struggling Readers (grades 5 through 12 and adults)

• General education intervention students
• Special education students
• Students with dyslexia

Entry Level: 60 to 130 wcpm on sixth-grade passage; approximately a 3rd to 5th grade reading level

Sample Results

Field test students gained as much 68 words correct per minute in fluency. (The average gain in fluency was 35 words correct per minute across 90 days of instruction.) Students also gained as much as 4.1 grade equivalent units in comprehension and vocabulary across 90 days of instruction. (The average gain was 1.4 grade equivalents, roughly 3 times the expected gain.)
